Property Description
The "Joseph Shinn House" circa 1742 is a rare example of 18th century frame architecture. In 1978 this property was entered on the State Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places due to the historic and architectural significance it holds. The State and National Registers give a measure of protection to the property from encroachment of or destruction by any federal, state, county or municipally initiated or funded project without due process of law. This 12 room, 2.5 bath home was originally built as a one-room wide by 2-room deep 2 1/2 story "town house". The southern portion (Family room) of the house is supposed to be a 17th century Indian trading post which was moved to its current location in the late 1700's. The northern portion (dining room) was added prior to 1820. Throughout the home there are many original fireplaces, windows, doors, hardware and wide-board pumpkin pine floors. The outstanding feature of the exterior is the Georgian entry with its original divided "Dutch" door and circular fan light. The most significant features of the interior are the front reception hall and fireplace, the bedroom above and the "sheep & Shears" fire back in the keeping room fireplace. Detailed house plans prepared by the WPA in 1946 are available to interested buyers. The house has been vacant for a year due to settling the estate of the previous owner. The new buyer will be responsible for all certifications necessary to secure financing. The listing agents encourage all history buffs to consider this home as it is one of the oldest homes, if not the oldest, in the Borough of Woodstown. This is a "AS IS" sale.
